MOSL marks successful opening of new competitive retail water market
Market Operator Services Ltd (MOSL) will mark the successful opening of the competitive retail market for non-household customers in England at an event with its members and programme partners in London this evening.
The new market opened on 1 April, enabling more than 1.2 million customers to choose their water retailer for the first time. More than 19,000 supply points have been switched to date.
Seven weeks on, and with the market operating effectively, MOSL is bringing together its water company members, Open Water programme partners Defra and Ofwat and other stakeholders to recognise the enormous achievement in creating the world’s largest competitive water market.
The introduction of competition is widely acknowledged to be the biggest, most significant change to the water sector since privatisation, as competition increasingly becomes a driver of improved service and efficiency.
MOSL has been at the heart of this process since its formation in June 2015, designing and building the central market systems and ensuring its members are ready for the market to open on time against challenging timescales.
As the enduring market operator, MOSL is continuing to refine and improve the central systems as part of its remit to maximise the effectiveness and efficiency of the market. In its role as secretariat of the code panel, it is also working with its members to help guide its future development.
Ben Jeffs, Chief Executive, said: “Before the opening of the market becomes a distant memory we are delighted to have the opportunity to bring together many of the people that helped make it happen. It has been an enormous team effort and we wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for all their hard work and support.”
