A new meter is installed as requested by a retailer at a new or existing supply point.

If a new meter has been installed to replace an old meter, but there is no change to the meter’s characteristics, this is considered a meter exchange. Click for more information on Meter Exchanges.

Customer touchpoint

The installation of a new meter will mean that the customer’s bill will not be calculated using estimated volumes. This may also require access to the customer’s premises by the wholesaler or accredited entity (who will install the meter).

Obligations under the market codes

The installation, location and choice of meter type at a premises is the responsibility of the wholesaler, unless they run an accredited entity scheme. It is the responsibility of the wholesaler to update CMOS. The wholesaler's responsibility during the meter installation process is set out in Section 15 of CSD 0104 (Maintain SPID data).

The retailer can request a meter to be installed and can further request for the work to be done by an accredited entity. The relevant forms for these requests are B/01: 'Metering activity carried out by the wholesaler' and B/02: 'Metering activity carried out by an accredited entity'.

The process for the retailer requesting the installation of a meter with a wholesaler or an accredited entity is set out in Part B of the Operational Terms.
